I am Interim Chair and UPMC Endowed Chair of Biomedical Informatics with training in artificial intelligence (AI), biomedical informatics, and clinical neurology. I lead interdisciplinary research advancing AI in biomedicine, with a focus on AI-enabled clinical decision support, ethically grounded clinical algorithms, patient-specific modeling, causal discovery from complex biomedical data, and ontology development.

The Vis Lab is in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh and is affiliated with the Intelligent Systems Program and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

• 2017 Mar Andrew King won first place in the AMIA Joint Summits Clinical Research Informatics Student Paper Competition for his paper on the use of eye-tracking in understanding clinician use of information in the EMR. Eye-tracking for clinical decision support: A method to capture automatically what physicians are viewing in the EMR. (March 27 to 30, 2017).

• 2016 Nov Eric Strobl was designated a Roth Fellow. These fellowship awards assist University of Pittsburgh medical students to engage in their Scholarly Projects, thus strengthening their career interests in psychiatric, behavioral and brain research. (November 29, 2016).

• 2016 Jul The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at the University of Pittsburgh has been funded for 5 years by a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). Shyam Visweswaran is a Co-Director of the Biomedical Informatics Core. The goal of the Biomedical Informatics Core is to establish an i2b2-based data repository; and develop and deploy user-friendly, web-based informatics tools such as a Cohort Discovery Tool, a Computable Phenotype Library, and a Data Transfer Tool (13 July 2016).

• 2016 Jul The University of Pittsburgh is funded as one of the Healthcare Provider Organizations for the national All of Us Research Program, which is a historic effort to gather data from 1 million people living in the United States. The goal of the program is to revolutionize how disease is prevented and treated based on individual differences in lifestyle, environment and genetics. The University of Pittsburgh's program, called the All of Us Pennsylvania Research Program, will enroll 120,000 participants. • 2015 Nov Andrew King won the Martin Epstein Award and first place in the American Medical Informatics Association 2015 Student Paper Competition for his paper on a prototype of a learning electronic medical record system.
